Osgood-Schlatter disease (OSD), or also called Tibial Tuberosity Apophysitis, is a painful symptom of children and adolescents encountering growth spurts during puberty. Boys are typically more at risk as they are involved in more physical sports, but that gap is closing as girls are now more involved in sports than ever. Boys aged 12-14 and girls aged 11-13 are the most affected. It can be painful, especially for children, but there are effective ways to help with the pain.

What is Osgood-Schlatter Disease?
It is a disease that occurs most commonly in adolescent children and is a symptom of being involved in sports that require running, jumping, and quick, swift movements. The telltale sign of the disease is a painful, bony bump right below the knee cap on the shin bone. The pain usually increases during physical activity, but then calms again during rest. Normally it only affects one knee but can occur in both. The pain can go on from weeks to months, or even until your child stops growing. A great way to circumvent pain related to OSD is to buy an effective knee brace when performing strenuous activity, along with any recommendations from a healthcare provider, such as a physical therapist.
It is most common in adolescents due to the greatest height increase that occurs during puberty. As a person grows taller, the quadriceps and the quadriceps tendon pull on Tibial Tuberosity. This continued pull on the shin bone causes an Apophysitis or increased growth of the bone causing the bump on the shin.
Why Does a Strap Brace Help with Osgood-Schlatter?
Pain relief by using a support strap is due to the change in tension and pressure in the knee. The strap changes where the greatest pull from the patella tendon is. Instead of the bone (tibial tubercle) being the point of strain it is now in the middle of the tendon where the brace sits. This allows for the tibial tubercle to calm down with decreased pain and inflammation.
